IRS criminal investigations. What you need to know. The IRS doesn't pursue criminal charges lightly, but when they do, the consequences could be severe. Here's how to spot warning signs. Common triggers include failing to file returns for multiple years, under reporting income, submitting false or fraudulent tax returns, or hiding assets or income offshore. There could be signs you're under investigation. If you receive subpoenas, IRS special agents contact you, or you notice unusual activity, you may be under investigation. Do not ignore these signs. Contact a tax attorney immediately to protect yourself and resolve the issues before they escalate.
