What to Expect From Your Free Consultation
Your first call runs about 20 to 30 minutes. A licensed tax attorney reviews the IRS notices you've received, your balance owed, and your basic financial situation. By the end of the call you'll know which resolution path fits — Installment Agreement, Offer in Compromise, Currently Not Collectible status, Penalty Abatement, or appeal — and what it would cost to pursue.
We don't take every case. If the IRS hasn't filed against you yet and your balance is under $25,000, you can usually negotiate a streamlined Installment Agreement on your own through irs.gov/payments. We'll tell you that on the call rather than sell you services you don't need.
What to have ready: any IRS letters (CP14, CP504, LT11, Letter 1058, Notice of Federal Tax Lien), your most recent tax return, and a rough estimate of monthly income and expenses. We don't need W-2s or bank statements on the first call.
Common Questions Before You Call
How fast can you stop a wage garnishment or bank levy?
With a signed engagement and Power of Attorney (Form 2848) we can contact the IRS the same day. Releases typically come within 24 to 48 hours of submitting alternative arrangements.
Does the IRS verify what we tell them?
Yes. Every Collection Information Statement (Form 433-A, 433-B, or 433-F) is cross-referenced against your tax filings, third-party records, and IRS internal data. We prepare these from your actual numbers, never inflated figures.
Will hiring an attorney cost more than the tax I owe?
Not for most cases above $25,000. Below that, we'll often recommend you handle it directly with the IRS using their online tools.
When the Free Consultation Saves the Most Time
A 30-minute consultation makes the biggest difference in five specific situations. If your IRS balance is over $50,000, the financial disclosure on Form 433-A or 433-B is detailed enough that a misstep changes monthly payment amounts significantly. If you've received an LT11 / Letter 1058, the 30-day Collection Due Process clock under IRC § 6330 is already running — missing it costs you Tax Court review rights for the collection action. If you have a Notice of Deficiency (CP3219A / Letter 3219), the 90-day Tax Court petition window is the only window where you can contest the assessment without first paying it.
If you're a self-employed taxpayer or business owner facing an audit, the auditor will issue Information Document Requests (Form 4564) requiring specific records. The order in which those records are produced — and what's marked as privileged versus disclosed — changes audit scope. Having representation before the first IDR is filed prevents expansion of the audit into adjacent years or related issues.
If you have unpaid Form 941 payroll taxes, the IRS investigates personal liability under the Trust Fund Recovery Penalty (IRC § 6672) through Form 4180 interviews of every officer with check-signing authority. Anything said in those interviews builds the case for personal assessment. This is the single situation where talking to a tax attorney before talking to the IRS makes the biggest difference in outcome.
After You Schedule the Call
You'll receive a calendar invite with a phone number to call (or a callback option, depending on the time slot). The attorney will have your basic information on file before the call so most of the 30 minutes can focus on the specifics of your situation rather than intake.
